![]() The game has four major categories of speedrunning, however. This was originally thought impossible, so of course it was a big deal. I don’t even want to know how much time he has spent perfecting the craft of Super Mario Bros. It even recently made the news thanks to American speed runner Niftski, who broke the world record for an Any completion run at 4 minutes, 54 seconds, and 798 milliseconds. I used this advice, and it’s likely that this is the reason this run turned out to be the record. Blubbler discovered that the rate at which Mario loses his speed on the ground in water is lower if you do NOT press right. Mario loses speed when walking on the ground in water. Ideally you want to swim into the pipe, or at least touch the ground closer to the pipe than I did. ![]() I also had poor movement here, as ideally you’ll go down the pipe to the water with a 357 on the in game timer.ģ) The exit to the water section was bad. There is no other time save that a human has ever done (even in practice) prior to 8-4.Ģ) In 8-4, my notable mistakes include scrolling the screen a pixel too far in the “turnaround” room. andrewg is the best person at getting this. This method of doing 4-2 saves 21 frames (0.35s), but is extremely difficult. A bunch of Super Mario Bros speedrunning videos were sent copyright claim notices based on a record holders speedrun that Guinness uploaded to their own channel. The scary thing is, he reckons he can do even better:ġ) The biggest remaining time save is to add in the faster method of doing level 4-2 (you can see it here: ). 8 comments Guinness World Records seems to have gotten a bit copyright cuckoo this weekend thanks in part to YouTubes automated Content ID system. So he beat the speedrun world record, but by how much? Oh nothing… just a mere 0:00:07 seconds! That’s right, the last record stood at 4:57:69, and Darbian’s clocked in at 4:57:627. Then you get speedrunners like Darbian who go ahead and finish the game in less than 5 minutes and make me realise how much I sucked at the game (via Kotaku): Remember how challenging it was, particularly in the later worlds? It took quite some time to reach that final castle, or at least, I remember it being that way. The point though, is that the game is iconic and very memorable, or at least it should be. Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense, even by today’s standards. Surely, everybody has some sort of memory of the game’s opening stage at the very least, where they were first introduced to goombas, killer turtles, and violent vegetation coming out of… pipes? I dare you to find a gamer who hasn’t played the very original Super Mario Bros at some point during their gaming career.
